Beginner Sewing Machines

Looking for a sewing machine for a child or the beginner?

We get a lot of requests for beginner sewing machines that would be ideal for children or the novice sewer.

Basic Beginner Sewing Machines

Basic mechanical sewing machines make a great beginner sewing machine for children, students, beginners, or just the casual sewer. They are good for mending and small projects, and perfect for anyone just learning how to sew. There's nothing fancy about them; no computerized or electronic settings, just a few dials and knobs for manually adjusting stitch type, length, width, and tension. They are the least expensive, easy to use and not too intimidating for the beginner.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS:

Basic Mechanical Sewing Machines:

The following are some of our recommendations for a few less expensive beginner sewing machines in the $75 – $115 range.

The Brother 2600i. This is a versatile, lightweight machine that is great for sewing, quilting, and decorating clothing. It comes with 25 built-in stitches, a thread cutter, automatic needle threader, drop-in bobbin system, quick-change presser feet, and a one-step automatic buttonholer. This is a great feature, considering most inexpensive machines come with a four-step buttonhole, which requires four steps instead of just one.

The Brother 2610. This machine is very much like the XL-2600i, except for one important feature. This has a four-step buttonholer, which unlike the Brother 2600i that has a one-step automatic buttonhole, requires four steps instead of one. Because of this, we would recommend the Brother 2600i.

The Brother LS-2125i. This sewing machine is lightweight, weighing only 15 pounds and having 10 built-in stitches and 25 stitch functions. The 2125 is perfect for basic sewing and mending.

The Janome Hello Kitty. This adorable sewing machine is a fully functional 3/4 model that is perfect for the beginning sewist! It offers a free arm and a carry handle for easy portability. This 12-lb. machine offers 11 stitches, including 2 stretch stitches and a built-in buttonhole. Standard Janome quality and durability make this the perfect machine for a first-time sewist as a quilting machine to take to classes.

The Singer 1507. This is a nice machine for beginners as well. Easy to use, 8-stitch machine for basic mending and sewing. It features a four-step buttonhole, 3 needle positions, easy bobbin winder, adjustable presser foot, and a free arm for sewing sleeves and pant legs.

Purchasing Online:
While you won't receive sewing lessons or personal assistance when buying, the machines cost less and you can save money by purchasing online. We recommend that you look around, check out your local sewing machine retailers, try out the machines. Once you decide on the machine you want, then shop for the best price. Take into consideration the cost of shipping. Some online retailers have free shipping, such as Allbrands, Amazon, and Joann.com.
